About the Artist

Laurie is a contemporary impressionist oil painter known for her colorful paintings of the outdoors.  She has been involved in art and design her whole life.  As a child she spent time in nature with her naturalist mother where vacation time consisted of camping in Central Florida where she grew up.  She lived in Florida 60 years and painted the historic farms and springs of the area.  She and her husband also spent summers in Montana where she painted the beautiful scenery out west and participated in the art scene there.

She has a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Georgia and worked in design for 20 years before discovering her love of painting.   With a working knowledge of design and landscapes, she has been able to work that knowledge into each compostion.  Using oil paint and gouache sketches, she strives to use loose brushwork as well as pallet knife in her landscapes.  Keeping her technique fresh, painting 'alla prima', wet-on-wet brush strokes is evident in her work.

After moving to Virginia she started painting the beautiful, inspiring landscape.  Laurie then joined the Loudon Sketch Club and has attended several paint outs.  She has competed in many professional paint outs in the area and shown her work in galleries also.

She has been a professional artist for 20 years and participated in paint outs all over America.  She actively promotes plein air painting, giving talks, classes and organizing outdoor painting.  She also teaches oil painting with the primary goal of teaching traditional oil painting, starting with the basics with instilling an understanding of the structure of a painting.   Laurie enjoys sharing a love of painting with others.
